What the heck is a Giclee?

A giclee (zhee-CLAY) is an individually produced, high resolution reproduction done on a special large format printer. Giclees are produced from digital scans of existing artwork or directly from a digital file.

Giclees can be printed on any number of media, from canvas to watercolor paper to transparent acetates. Giclees are superior to traditional lithography in several ways. The colors are brighter, last longer, and are so high resolution that they are virtually continuous tone, rather than tiny dots. The range, or "gamut" of color for giclees is far beyond that of lithography, and details are crisper.

Lithography uses tiny dots of four colors (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) to fool the eye into seeing various hues and shades. Colors are "created" by printing different size dots of these four colors.

Giclees use inkjet technology, but far more sophisticated than your desktop printer. The process employs six colors (light cyan, cyan, light magenta, magenta, yellow, and black) of light fast, pigmented inks and finer, more numerous, and replaceable print heads resulting in a wider color gamut, and the ability to use various media to print on. The ink is sprayed onto the page, actually mixing the color on the page to create true shades and hues.

Giclees were originally developed as a proofing system for lithograph printing presses, but it became apparent that the presses were having a hard time delivering the quality and color of the giclee proofs. In addition, Giclees are produced directly from a digital file, saving generations of detail robbing negatives and printing plates, as with traditional printing.

What is a limited edition giclee?

A reproduction of an original work art of using the giclee method produced in a limited quantity of prints. Each print is hand signed and numbered by the artist and comes with a letter of authenticity.

Limited edition giclees are the most sought after by art collectors due to their excellent image quality and limited numbers.

What type of paper are the giclee prints on?

The Flats Hunter limited edition giclees are printed on 100% cotton rag, acid free, museum quality paper. Each sheet has a unique "velvet" surface that captures and preserves rich details and accurate color and is over 36 mils thick.

What is a limited edition canvas giclee?

Every piece of Flats Hunter artwork is also available as a limited edition canvas reproduction. The Limited Edition Canvas Giclees are only reproduced in finite numbers and also come hand signed and numbered by the artist with a letter of authenticity.

What is an open edition mini print?

A small reproduction of an original work of art using the same method and media as the limited edition giclee. Open edition mini-prints are not numbered or "limited" in edition and can be reproduced in an unlimited amount of numbers.

Mini prints are better suited for someone who has limited wall space and would like a smaller print of their favorite artwork.

If you are interested in a commissioned piece of artwork please contact me.

Are your originals for sale?

I've decided at this time to keep all of my originals for my private collection and they are not for sale.

What type of Guarantee do you have?

Due to the low resolution of the Internet, the images shown here on Flats Hunter represent a fraction of the quality of the original works of art. The amount of detail and color of the originals far exceeds what you see here.
