Finding Redfish

Redfish remain on the flats year long except when a cold spell drops the water temperature below fifty degrees. When the water warms above the fifty degree mark the redfish quickly return. The best season for redfishing in Florida Bay is between May through October.

A redfish's unique coloring makes him easier to spot then other flats species. A tailing redfish can be spotted from a great distance. If there are no tailing fish in sight, look for nervous water. Like all other fish in shallow water, redfish leave slight ripples or a wake that reveals their location and direction. Always remember to account for their speed and cast ahead of the fish so that your fly intercepts him at the correct spot and depth.

If you are planning a trip for redfish, don't forget to look at Cape Canaveral. This lush ecosystem offers some of the best redfishing in the country.
